June 16 -  Preview Towerrunning 200  Vienna Jun 17     Brno Jun 18   Bratislava Jun 19

Three days - three towers - three countries - third edition. From Friday 17th to Sunday 19st  the centre of Europe will be the centre of the Towerrunning world with climbers racing up 779 steps up Vienna’s 150m high Danube Tower (Donauturm) in Austria, 631 stairs up Brno’s AZ Tower in the Czech Republic and finally the challenging 430 step up the UFO in Bratislava, Slovakia.  Runners will score points at each event according to the well known factor 80 scheme with the overall highest point scorers vying for a share of the 4,200 Euro prize pool. As the event name indicates these sums over the three single races are evaluated for the Towerrunning Ranking according to factor 200 scheme.

We look forward to three days of exciting sport. Looking at the actual May ranking the top seven males have registered and we have 2 athletes out of the top 20. Additionally to these top Europeans traditionally participating we have strong overseas competitors like the two best listed US athletes (Jason Larson and Sproule Love) as well as the leading athletes from Colombia (Frank Nicolas Carreno) and Mexico (Gustavo Isaac Mendoza). We can expect a continuation of the all season duel between defending champion and ranking leader Piotr Lobodzinski (POL) and Christian Riedl (GER). Or will there be a surprise by Tomas Celko (SVK), who is definitely a cofavourite for the fastest time in the Sunday race at the UFO. Matjaz Miklosa (SLO), Tomas Macecek (CZE), Stefan Stefina (SVK) and Klaus Hausleitner (AUT) are all contenders for podium places at single events.

Last year all three single races and naturally the combined were won by Suzy Walsham (AUS) and she is very motivated to defend this title. After  a convincing win in Frankfurt last Sunday she will face the same main contenders like last year, Dominika Wisniewska Ulfik from Poland and the two Czech athletes Lenka Svabikova and Zuzana Krchova. An additional element of excitement is the fact, that Svabikova, Wisniewska-Ulfik and Walsham currently are divided only by a few points in the Towerrunning Ranking and the outcome of the Vienna-Brno-Bratislava Race might prove decisive for changes in the upcoming ranking. Friday in Vienna two strong Austrians might surprise too: Veronika Windisch, Short Track Olympian and recently winner of three national stair races as well as Sandrina Illes, two weeks ago placing 5th in the Duathlon World Championships.

June 12 – Race Report SkyRun MesseTurm Frankfurt - German Towerrunning Championships

The SkyRun MesseTurm Frankfurt celebrated its 10th anniversary edition on June 12. This race combines in exceptional way the charity aspect with outstanding sporting achievements. Race Director since 2007 is Michael Lederer (for many years an official IAAF world record holder as member of the German 4x1500m relay team) and he did an outstanding job again attracting a world class athlete field and raising a noticeable sum for ARQUE, an organization supporting people born with paraplegia. Besides the main race, the so called  "sprint" over 61 floors with 1202 stairs there are corporate divisions, a kids cup and high class firefighter races. And always there are some participants climbing the iconic MesseTurm , which still is the most prominent exponent of the famous Frankfurt skyline, up to ten times.

The female race once again was dominated by Suzy Walsham. Her 7:47,3 was the 10th fastest overall time of the day and it meant the 5th title in a row for this Singapore living Australian athlete on the start of her European tour. A bit over a minute longer (8:47,9) needed the current ranking leader Lenka Svabikova (CZE), adding another podium place to her Frankfurt  record. The 9:25,5 clocked by Sylvia Jacobs from Berlin meant not only a podium place at the SkyRun, but also crowned her German Towerrunning Champion 2016. The championship podium was completed by Helen Hemmling (9:48,3) and Anna Lena Böckel (9:53,3), Cordula Galster missed it by just 0,6 seconds meaning 6th place in the female field . Estonian Egle Uljas (Olympian semifinalist over 400m in Athens 2004) in 9:55,4 on 7th position closed the sub10 females.

There was more tension in the male race. We saw another round in the duel of the season between reigning World Champion Piotr Lobodzinski from Poland and reigning European Champion Christian Riedl from Germany. Riedl was the SkyRun winner of 2012 (first heat of the inaugural European Championships then), while Lobodzinski won three times from 2013 to 2015 always with Riedl as runner up. On this Frankfurt sunday the German athlete made it 2:3, a narrow 2,1 seconds deciding the race. A time of 6:25,5 marked the 2nd SkyRun win for Christian Riedl as well as the title of German Towerrunning Champion 2016. Piotr Lobodzinski, who competed in France later that day too, had to be content with runner up position in 6:27,6. Third place for the 3rd time in a row was achieved by Austria living Slovak athlete Tomas Celko in 6:48,7. On his premiere race in Europe Gustavo Isaac Mendoza clocked a strong 7:18,6 and placed 4th followed by the German trio of Ralf Hascher (7:22,0 - 2nd German Championships), Patrick Schäfer (7:24,4 - 3rd German Championships) and Görge Heimann (President of Towerrunning Germany).

The 10th SkyRun MesseTurm Frankfurt once again brought great sport combined with the good cause of raising money for ARQUE and we look forward to the next stop of the Towerrunning Tour this coming weekend, when many of the succesful athletes will participate in the three countries Towerrunning 200 race Vienna/Brno/Bratislava !

May 29 – Race Report Towerrunning Trial 60 -  Broadgate Tower Stair Climb - London      Gallery

The first Total Motion Events stair climb of 2016 was staged at the popular Broadgate Tower venue in the heart of the City of London for race 2 of the UK Championships.  The event saw an impressive array of elites assemble to compete for TWA ranking points in this Trial 60 event as well as the top prize of travel packages to compete in China courtesy of The Asian Oceanian Vertical Marathon Association.

The male field comprised a strong UK contingent including last November’s winner Mark Sims as well as the Sirrs brothers, Rich and Dan and joined by David Robles and Christian Lopez Rodriguez fresh from competing in Benidorm at the 14th Subida Vertical Grand Hotel Bali. The course record at The Broadgate Tower was 4:07 held by Ralf Hascher, but that record was broken with the very first run of the day with David Robles clocking a hugely impressive 3:58.03 to take a massive 9 seconds out of Hascher’s best.  This time proved to be impossible to overhaul over the course of the day as Rich Sirrs came in 2nd in 4:11.5 and Mark Sims 3rd in 4:23.06.  In the women’s race it was world number 5 Cristina Bonacina who led the way, with Lisa Zeigel’s early run beaten in to second, and Cressida Bramley in the open category in 3rd place. Congratulations to David Robles and Cristina Bonacina on your hard earned victories and collecting those coveted travel packages to compete in China.

The sport of towerrunning continues to grow across the UK with the team at The Broadgate Tower proving to be of great support to us at Total Motion and to the wider towerrunning community.  Also a special mention to ‘What’s My Time’ for providing 100% accurate timings for the event, specially in light of the new course record.  And finally well done to everyone taking part, hope to see you next time.

May 14 – Race Report Towerrunning 120 -  Subida Vertical Gran Hotel Bali - Benidorm      Gallery

Spain’s only Towerrunning Tour race was held in the coastal resort city of Benidorm last Saturday with the 13th staging of the Subida Gran Hotel Bali.  Despite very strong local competition, it was current European Champion Christian Riedl (GER) and European Championships runner up Iwona Wicha (POL) who took decisive victories.

Riedl smashed the course record by 13 seconds , proving his good form with an incredible time of 4:20.  “I am very happy both with the win and the new course record, iam in a good form right now and hope to be able to continue like this at the next races too ” said Riedl. In second place was Polish runner Piotr Lobodzinski who also beat the former course record, finishing in strong 4:28, with Stefan Stefina from Slovakia a close third in 4:33.

Wicha became only the third woman ever to break the 6min barrier, running a strong 5:55, to finish only a 1 second ahead of Dominika Wisniewska (POL).     “I was really pleased with my run today, it was my first ever Towerrunning 120 win, so iam very happy” commented Wicha “I really like the stairwell and the race atmosphere.”  Spain Maria Beltran Toledo was third in 6:15.  The top 3 women’s times were some of the fastest in the history of the race.

As the tallest building in the city, it is not a surprise that the Gran Hotel Bali has hosted the event for the past 13 years.  The rising popularity of the sport of Towerrunning saw increase of almost 100% in the number of competitors from the previous year, as runners challenged themselves up the 936 steps, 52 floors to the 190m high finish.  “ Excelent race, new course record and sunny weather,  what more can we expect from a race...” commented Dano Cecetka, TWA  President “Gran Hotel Bali Benidorm is an ideal place to organize such an event and we look forward to a strong future collaboration between the TWA and Gran Hotel Bali to continue the tradition of this great event.”
